POWER USER PRO TIP

Counting Text with Pivots

PivotTables are typically used for aggregating and filtering numerical values, but don’t you DARE assume that’s all they’re good for. Pivots are incredibly useful tools for understanding data distribution and composition as well, using counts (or frequencies) of non-numerical fields.

In this tip, we’ll ignore our values and practice exploring our data using only text-based fields.

COMMON USE CASES:

  • Analyzing the number of rows or observations that fall into specific categories
  • Generating source data for statistical charts like histograms/pareto charts
