Counting Words in a Cell

While counting individual characters in a cell is quite simple (using the LEN function alone), counting entire words requires a bit more creativity.

In this tip, we’ll combine LEN, SUBSTITUTE, and TRIM functions to build our own “Word Counter” in Excel.

COMMON USE CASES:

  • Adding counters for cases where text length is restricted
  • Analyzing text fields (Tweets, Blogs, Ad Copy, etc.) based on length
